Spring is here!

Beside s the new growth we see all around us, have you noticed a desire for self-renewal? It’s no accident that human beings have had a tradition of spring cleaning for centuries. For many culures, this season is a time of renewal and regeneration – time to detox and do away with what's no longer serving you. Cleanse, renew and start fresh.

In Eastern practice, each season has an organ of the body associated with it, and Spring actually has two – the liver and gallbladder. The liver is associated with the color green and is yang in nature. Yang is life, energy and springing in to life; hence, the new growth we see everywhere even in the plants and trees.

This week, while I was out shopping, I overheard a fellow shopper comment that she was buying items to freshen up the look in her home. Her comment reminded me that renewal means different things to different people.

Those of us in the practice of self-care know, for example, that “yang” is the principle of Taoism with characteristics such as being active, positive, upward-seeking, and growing. So, in this season, find what works for you to renew yourself in mind and body; won't you?

Some people may be inclined to follow a detoxification protocol.

Detoxing the mind is a good idea. An excellent way to do this is to go on a retreat. This ancient practice offers time to help your “self” discover a new strength at your core. I myself went on a retreat at Lake Tahoe recently and found it an effective way to clear my mind and restart.

One of the things I find helpful about a retreat is the way it infuses me with new energy for my work in supporting my clients’ self-care. If I am to be effective as a massage therapist, I must first take care of myself before I can help others. And, I am betting you could use a time away to refresh and renew before getting back to the business of being you.

Here’s a short video clip of my recent retreat.

In the future, I’ll be sharing some of my thoughts from this retreat with you. In the meantime, remember that massage can be a kind of "mini retreat". So, book your session with us and choose a massage package that works for you. Massage can help reduce stress and aid with achieving life balance. In fact, you might want to take a look at my blog article about this subject titled, "Massage, the Scheduled Antidote to Unplanned Stress".
